Cambridge Police Arrest Suspect in June 2025 Fatal Shooting

Cambridge, MD - On June 25, 2025, at approximately 8:37 p.m., officers from the Cambridge Police Department responded to a reported shooting near the intersection of the West Side Bypass and Route 343 in Cambridge, Maryland.
Upon their arrival, officers observed a 45-year-old male victim with a single gunshot wound to the upper chest lying on the roadway.
The victim was receiving CPR from a civilian and an off-duty police officer. Despite life-saving measures, Dorchester County EMS pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. The victim was identified as Steven Lee Dennis, a resident of Cambridge, MD.
A passenger vehicle was observed leaving the area shortly after the incident, prompting an extensive investigation led by the Cambridge Police Department Criminal Investigation Division (CID). Detectives identified 18-year-old Damarion Tyron Sampson, also of Cambridge, MD, as a subject of interest in the homicide.
On June 27, 2025, at approximately 12:28 p.m., Sampson was located and arrested without incident on Johnson Street at Oak Street by members of the Cambridge Police Department Special Tactical Response Team (STRT) and the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office.
This arrest was based on an unrelated Dorchester County District Court arrest warrant for a recent armed robbery.
Later that day, a Search and Seizure Warrant was executed at Sampson's residence on the 100 block of Richardson Drive. During the search, detectives recovered a handgun, and the vehicle suspected to have been used in the homicide.
On July 9, 2025, CPD detectives formally charged Sampson with the June 25 homicide while he was detained at the Dorchester County Detention Center on the unrelated charges.
Sampson remains in custody without bond and has been charged with the following offenses related to the incident:
- First-Degree Murder
- Second-Degree Murder
- First-Degree Assault
- Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony Violent Crime
- Second-Degree Assault
- Reckless Endangerment
- Reckless Endangerment from a Vehicle
- Handgun in Vehicle
- Loaded Handgun in Vehicle
- Handgun on Person
- Loaded Handgun on Person
- Possession of a Firearm by a Minor
