POCOMOKE ASSAULT SUSPECT HELD WITH NO BOND

Pocomoke City, MD - On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, the Pocomoke City Police Department began an investigation into a first-degree assault on Cherry Street in Pocomoke, Maryland. 

Police confirmed that a serious assault had taken place, where the suspect, identified as Jakeim Donte Smullen of Pocomoke City, Maryland, assaulted a family member with a weapon.  

Initially, it was reported that the victim was assaulted with an axe however Eastern Shore Undercover spoke with Pocomoke City Police Chief Arthur Hancock, who informed us that the weapon used was a large machete. 

Smullen was taken into custody shortly after the incident took place, and there was no threat to the public. 

The victim was transported to Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police Trooper 2. Last night, the victim was awake and alert in the ambulance however we do not have any updates on his condition this morning.   

Earlier this morning, Smullen was seen by the District Court of Maryland Commissioner, where he was officially charged with the following: 


  • First Degree Assault

  • Attempted First Degree Murder

  • Attempted Second Degree Murder

  • Reckless Endangerment

  • Dangerous Weapon-Intent/Injure

  • Second Degree Assault

  • Affray


The commissioner held Smullen without bond.  Smullen will have a bond review on Friday, December 1, 2023.
