Couple Indicted in Case of Baby Hunter's Injuries

Accomack County, VA - A Accomack County Grand Jury indicted a former Chincoteague Island couple on Monday in Connection with injuries suffered by their infant son back in 2022. The child, now known to our readers as Hunter, was the victim of Shaken Baby Syndrome at just six weeks old.

Twenty-five-year-old Amber Nicole Leager and twenty-four-year-old Carlton Edward Robbins face one count of maliciously wounding their infant son. They also each face two counts of neglecting a child by failing to act or refusing to provide necessary health care.

Leager and Robbins were more recently living on High Street in Seaford, Delaware. Both are currently being held in the Accomack County Jail following their indictment.

The incident that changed Hunter's life happened on October 11, 2022. He was found unresponsive in his great-grandmother's home in Chincoteague Island, Virginia. Hunter suffered a traumatic brain injury, seizures, cerebral palsy, and is legally blind as a result.

Leager and Robbins were not arrested until this past January, years after the incident took place. Hunter, who is now in the care of a loving family who have gone through the process to legally adopt and welcome him with open arms as their son, despite his ongoing health challenges.

Eastern Shore Undercover attempted to attend a court hearing last month to keep our community informed. We were told by court staff that Virginia law does not allow press or media inside the courtroom when a minor is involved in the case.

However, we later learned that a number of members of the public were present and allowed to remain in the courtroom throughout all phases of the hearing. We want our readers to know exactly what happened so you have the full picture.

This case has been years in the making for Hunter and his adoptive family, as well as others involved in this case, and their goal throughout all of this is to see that justice is served!
